For the second year in a row, Harlingen CISD counselors have been named finalists in the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, representing both the elementary and secondary counselor categories in the South Texas Region.

On February 20, Jessica Vigstol from Treasure Hills Elementary and Dr. Valerie Paredes from UTRGV Harlingen Collegiate High were surprised on their campuses in front of their students. H-E-B representatives, HCISD board members, district administrators, and campus staff gathered to announce their selection as finalists and celebrate their achievement, presenting them with balloons, flowers, and a $1,000 check.

ā€œIā€™m so thankful that H-E-B is partnering to recognize the great work that all school counselors do, and Iā€™m so happy that I get to be a small part of a great profession that is aimed at helping not only students, staff but the community and, of course, our future generations,ā€ said Dr. Paredes.

ā€œIā€™m very, very honored to receive this award. Thank you, guys, so much. This is amazing and itā€™s great for counselors. Iā€™m so glad that this opportunity has been opened up for us,ā€ said Mrs. Vigstol.

As finalists, each counselor received $1,000 for themselves and an additional $1,500 for their campuses. In May, Mrs. Vigstol and Dr. Paredes will travel to Austin to compete against other top counselors from across the state for the grand prize of $10,000 for themselves and $15,000 for their schools.

ā€œThis recognition highlights the dedication and passion our counselors bring to their work every day,ā€ said Sylvia Gamboa, Director of Guidance and Counseling. ā€œWe are incredibly proud of Mrs. Vigstol and Dr. Paredes for their commitment to our students and their well-being.ā€

The School Counselor Award recognizes professionals who create a safe, supportive, and caring environment for all students, coordinate counseling services that assist students, and demonstrate professionalism and leadership that positively impact their school communities.

Harlingen CISD is incredibly proud of Mrs. Vigstol and Dr. Paredes for their dedication to students and the impact they make every day. We are cheering them on as they head to Austin, and we know they will represent our district with excellence.
