Grant

Harlingen CISD is proud to announce that Gutierrez Middle School of Arts & Sciences (GMS) has been selected as a grant recipient of the American Theatre Wing’s Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative. This $15,000 award will be used to establish a black box theater, a much-needed dedicated performance space for students.

Led by Mr. Matthew Rodriguez, Theatre Teacher at GMS, the Black Box Initiative will transform a classroom into a professional-grade black box theater. Grant funds will fund lighting and sound equipment, flexible seating, and a stage area, creating an immersive environment where students can explore all aspects of theater production, from acting and directing to stagecraft and technical operations.

“This grant is a game-changer for our campus,” said Principal Mike Reyes. “It’s incredible to see the opportunities this project will bring to our students, allowing them to develop their creativity, confidence, and collaboration skills in a state-of-the-art space. We are so proud of Mr. Rodriguez and his dedication to making this project a success.”

Mr. Rodriguez also expressed his gratitude to the American Theatre Wing’s Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative for their generosity and commitment to supporting arts education. “This grant is a dream come true for our students and our school,” said Rodriguez. “It will provide them with hands-on experiences in theater production that were previously out of reach. I’m deeply thankful to the American Theatre Wing’s Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative for believing in our vision and making this transformation possible.”

This Black Box Initiative is designed to provide hands-on theater education for 6th – 8th graders while reflecting the school’s student population. By incorporating culturally relevant performances and hosting community showcases, the project will strengthen connections between the school and the wider community.

GMS aims to have the black box theater ready for the 2025-2026 school year.
