Family Learning Centers
The Harlingen Family Learning Centers are projects shared by the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District in partnership with Harlingen Housing Authority and the Cameron County Housing Authority. They are located at five housing developments which are The Harlingen Housing Authority’s four housing developments; Bonita Park, Le Moyne Gardens, Los Vecinos and Sunset Terrace and The Cameron County Housing Authority’s Casa Grande Housing Development.
The Family Learning Centers provide students from the housing developments and nearby neighborhoods a place to receive individualized tutoring from a HCISD trained master teacher and student mentors. Open Monday through Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 P.M., the learning centers offer students a welcoming learning environment where students bring school teacher’s assigned home work, projects and materials to study in preparation for testing. Center teachers and student mentors motivate and encourage students to complete their assignments by helping them to understand, construct, or are instructed how to start and finish an assignment with pride.
The Learning Centers also provide a safe environment for students to come and enjoy playing a variety of games with the mentors and friends. Parents are always welcome to come and join their children and observe them studying or playing. The greatest contribution the staff at the centers offers the students is to show them that they cared for, guided, and above all inspired to succeed in an atmosphere that is conducive to learning
